[Other] Art. Particularly Visual.

There are so many times that I can, and do, say "as an artist"
Even if i have not had a stupendous art education, I have had some. Enough to understand and appriciate all different kinds of art.

Enough that it bothers me when people who are less educated in art (even if highly educated in other subjects) think that some art
ISNT art.

What defines art? I guess we do. If photography isnt an art to you, well great... but you dont get to decide what goes into an art museum, the museum does.
Where do they draw the line on art? Many of them accept very obscure art that most of us would never consider "art" in our wildest dreams, no matter how long we look at it. (for example, the Contemporary Art Museum of Denver once had an exhibit that I saw where a lot of machines and whoopee cushions were involved. the machines inflated, and then farted out the air from the whoopee cushion repeatedly in four plastic boxes on one wall.)
Why do they call it art? Well why does anyone call ANYTHING art? Is it NOT art just because it doesnt look like a forest or mountain or man on a toilet? If your child draws a stick figure in a triangle dress, and you ask them "who is that?" but they answer "i dont know" is it no longer art because she drew no one in particular?
Certainly NOT.

While some art is strange...and can be difficult to interpret,
its art.

ART is MEANING MAKING.

art is and always has been a form of communication. Expressing ones self....to whom? an audience. even if that audience is only ever the artist, the artist did it to get something out. to show something. because they had a message. a meaning.

The only time i will ever throw a hissy fit is if someone breaks copyright law. it just burns my biscuits when people think that everything on Google images is free pickings.

but even if i dont throw a fit, it still burns a part of me inside when someone looks at something beautiful and says "well it doesnt count as art because it just looks like this other thing"
no it doesnt. it looks completely different. shows a completely different message.
but they cant see it because the only art they call art...is landscapes and portraits. in their mind, if it doesnt ACTUALLY look like a person, its not art. If it doesnt ACTUALLY look like a tree, its not art.

they forget anything about culture and style and how a person changes something and recreates it completely... its a new piece of art. but they only see the person...the subject. never the message.

and thats sad.
