Local elections will be hold in Croatia on May 17, 18 and 19. This includes election of the mayor and city council of Zagreb, the capital and largest city in Croatia. Croatia's membership to the European Union was recently accepted, however it has not been integrated into the EU yet. Many Croatians are disappointed with the decision to join the European Union. It should be interesting to see if parties opposed to the European Union make major gains or not in these local elections.
Croatia has a multi-party system, with two major political parties and a large number of smaller parties. The two larges parties are the Croatian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party. The Croatian Democratic Union is a centre-right conservative and Christian democratic party. The Social Democratic Party is a centre-left social democratic party. An interesting characteristic of Croatian politics is that there are a large number of regional and minority interest parties.
The Croatian Democratic Union and it's coalition parties won the last local elections in 2009. The Social Democratic Party and it's coalition won the last parliamentary election in 2011, however.
